chapter twenty

Becoming your own frame of reference. Perceiving a reality all assume is shared.
Orchestrating the way the world responds to you.
How alternate aspects of identity affect your moods.
The nature of remembered experience.
The higher self.

p191 The tantalizing excitements that may once have formed the focus of your life begin to seem hollow and pointless and reveal themselves as avenues to ego-gratification. They are the reference points in a world that is based upon pleasuring the self and cultivating the favor of others. They are goals that may once have seemed attainable through the application of a lifetime of toil and shrewd strategy. Yet, once attained, all appear shallow and empty. There is not one amongst you, who has harvested the fullness of material “success,” who was utterly gratified by it. There always was something missing. And so, you chose to come back to chase that elusive something, yet again—a different prize that was, in the end, equally empty.
